Career/Technical Education and Special Services IEP In-service WE are on the same team!

When choosing a CTE course for all special needs students:  Pre-Assessment results are Key in Career/Technical Education Courses. The student’s interest, and ability must be considered in placement. AL SDE Administrative Code (a)  Use Career Cruising On-line to determine pathway.

 Check the Academic Guide or web site for courses offered:  Print the objectives for the Career/Technical Alabama Course of Study.  Ensure the student meets the requirements on the Essential Functions List.  Set or review the student’s career objective.

NOTES:  Students participating in Cooperative Education should have a career objective.  Course offerings in the system must also be considered as the career objective is determined.

 Students should be exposed to curriculum relevant to their career objective to be eligible for participation in cooperative education.  If the system does not offer courses that relate to student’s career objective, the student is not eligible to participate. A choice must then be made to select an objective that will allow the student to take courses that are offered.

Example: Career Objective: Registered Nurse Career/Technical Courses 1. Therapeutic Innovations and Dynamics of Diagnostics 2. Clinical Spectrum

 Invite the CTE Teacher to the IEP meeting when possible. Provide ample notice to teacher. A CTE designee having content knowledge shall serve on the IEP committee at all IEP meetings when students are placed in CTE courses. AL SDE Administrative Code (c)  Please Note: The Career & Technical Teacher is the best representative for his/her program.

 At the meeting, review with the CTE Teacher the following: Profile Transition Page Accommodations and/or Modifications

NOTES: Modifications can only be made on a certificated student. No modifications can be made for an AOD or Regular Diploma student. Coop Coordinators must be given documentation of successful completion of the community-based evaluation (if applicable)

Specific to Workforce Essentials & Cooperative Education Our purpose is to prepare students for careers and employment based on his/her career objective. Our goal is to provide quality learning experiences to students that will enable them to function effectively as good citizens, lifelong learners, and productive employees.

Cooperative Education also Provides students with a strong theoretical background in their chosen career field linked to a solid, work-based experience.

 The student is 16 years old.  The student should be physically and mentally capable of performing the tasks of the career objective. Student Requirements

Cooperative Education has two strands for participation: Coordinated Education Seminar I- 1 Credit Course Coordinated Education Seminar II 2 Credit Course

 completed two CTE credits in a sequenced program of study related to the student’s career objective or may be allowed to be enrolled simultaneously in 2 nd CTE course. EXAMPLE: Career objective: Public Relations Agent Course 1: Marketing Dynamics Course 2: Personal and Business Finance Coordinated Education Seminar I or Coordinated Education Seminar II

Coordinated Education Seminar I or II  One or more CTE courses in any Occupational Program Area Family Life Courses and Career Technologies will not count

 When students COOP, their job placement must be aligned with their career objective.  The students CTE course work must also relate to the career objective.

Please check Alabama State Department of Education Web site for full list of requirements. Sections: Career/Technical Course of Study

Remember! Students should be responsible and follow the guidelines of the cooperative education program to be successful.

Teachers want students to be successful!  CTE Teachers must consider safety issues in their department.  Students are required to meet expectations in the course of study.  All CTE Programs are reviewed through the Business and Industry Certification process or NCCER certification and must meet all requirements

There must be good communication between the Case Manager and the CTE teacher. If the student is not doing well in Career Technical Courses or Coordinated Studies, the case manager should be contacted and remediation plan should be developed immediately.

 AOD students should have completed all requirements and are on track to graduate before being place in coop.  Discovering credit deficiencies during the student’s senior year prevents completion of the anticipated graduation date. NOTES:
