Previous plans ”The bycycle town of Tønsberg” – project from 1990 – 2000 ”Tønsberg-package” for better road accessability Traffic security plans / universal design - Are now an integrated part of city plans and regulation

Challenges Ineffective infrastructure Problems with traffic jams during rush hours Through traffic in the city centre Low capacity at the city bus station Lag in road maintenance The solutions demand large investments in roads, tunnels/bridges etc. People love their car…

Where are we going? Future goals: –sufficient capacity on main roads –well-developed and effective public transportation system –a city centre without through traffic –a well-developed net of pedestrian and cycle roads/lanes –New main plan for for cycling and pedestrians?

Regional planning – regional plan for sustainable development Main objectives for the transportation system in the region: Development of roading network Developing a modern railway through Vestfold, and to Oslo Parking strategies Streightening of public transport

Preliminary report: Regional plan for the streightening of public transportation ”Easier to stay and live without a car” Effect goals: –Land use development that reduces the future transportation needs –Effective transport solutions that makes the region an attractive place to live –Change in transport distribution, goals for urban areas 2023 (2005): Public transportation 6,5 % (4,2%) Cycling 10% (6,2%) Pedestrians 23% (18%) Car/passenger 58% (69%)

…but how? Public transportation: development of routes and schedules, frequency, pricing, road standards etc. City environment, pedestrians and cycle measures: centre structures, quality, settlement patterns Car restrictions: parking strategies, pricing Mobility management: stimulating/incentives Ex: For businesses/firms to take more responsibility towards the emploees travel habits (environmental and health friendly travel methods)

Joint project ideas Peoples health and prevention in ralation to transport (and other aspects of the society) Ideas for public involvement and engagement in changing daily transportation habits (mobility management)
