JEMMA: an open platform for a connected Smart Grid Gateway GRUPPO TELECOM ITALIA MAS2TERING Smart Grid Workshop Brussels, September Strategy & Innovation Ivan Grimaldi

Association Ivan Grimaldi, Strategy & Innovation Non-profit Association founded on July ’ members so far Competitors collaborate to create a market Scope: demand side management & home energy efficiency, not limited to the italian market Goal: create a market for new Value Added Services based upon device-to-device communication and demand side management Approach: Open and International Standard, value networking through industries, trials & regulations JEMMA: an open platform for a connected Smart Grid Gateway

Smart Grid & Home Automation Trends JEMMA: an open platform for a connected Smart Grid Gateway Ivan Grimaldi, Strategy & Innovation Home Automation Growing number of heterogeneous connected devices at home (smart appliances, sensors, HA devices etc.) Standards fragmentation in the HA domain (slowly) reducing Addressing flexibility without affecting user comfort requires deep knowledge about devices behavior and … … personalized interaction with users by means of “friendly” interfaces accessed through his/her own devices Home Automation Growing number of heterogeneous connected devices at home (smart appliances, sensors, HA devices etc.) Standards fragmentation in the HA domain (slowly) reducing Addressing flexibility without affecting user comfort requires deep knowledge about devices behavior and … … personalized interaction with users by means of “friendly” interfaces accessed through his/her own devices The Smart Grid Growing shares of RES to be exploited (more) dynamic market conditions Emergence of new business models and contract frameworks across EU Stimulating and exploiting flexibility of user’s loads is becoming a must! 4 The CEMS role JEMMA: an open platform for a connected Smart Grid Gateway Ivan Grimaldi, Strategy & Innovation The CEMS is a functional component enabling optimization of energy consumption and production in home environment How does it work ? it interacts with connected devices and users, it knows about consumer’s settings and contracts, It receives grid signals. Typical interactions with devices: collection of consumption information, collection of load profiles, scheduling, direct control, device configuration (e.g. of thresholds, etc.).

Home Automation & Energy Reference architecture JEMMA: an open platform for a connected Smart Grid Gateway Ivan Grimaldi, Strategy & Innovation Smart Appliances Local Customer Interfaces Smart Meter Smart Grid Infrastructure Smart Grid Infrastructure Smart Metering GW “Dumb” Appliances Smart Plugs Home Automation Devices Cloud Infrastructure Cloud Infrastructure CEMS Local Generation and Storage Home Area Network approach: Turn CEMS into an Open Eco-system approach: Turn CEMS into an Open Eco-system

JEMMA: the CEMS JEMMA: an open platform for a connected Smart Grid Gateway Ivan Grimaldi, Strategy & Innovation JEMMA: Java Energy ManageMent Application is the CEMS reference implementation delivered by It can be used to rapidly prototype and deploy smart energy applications at home First Released in October 2013 Based on an a CEMS solution developed and validated in the trials Initial code contribution by Telecom Italia Current version: v1.0 to be released in October Hosted on GitHub

JEMMA: Main Implemented Standards Ivan Grimaldi, Strategy & Innovation JEMMA: an open platform for a connected Smart Grid Gateway  The communication with appliances within the home area network is managed by an implementation of ZigBee Home Automation 1.2  a low power wireless protocol for HAN  contributed to 1.2 spec  The whole codebase takes advantage of OSGi (Open Service Gateway Initiative) specifications  This including Open APIs for third parties application, bringing an implementation of a Device Abstraction Layer available from R6 specifications (Aug, 2015)
