5 th Grade Science Fair

What is a science fair? J. Glenn Edwards will be hosting a science fair, and your child will be participating! Each child will create a project that exemplifies all steps of the scientific method. The projects should be creative, neat, well organized, and clearly label the steps of the scientific method on a tri-fold poster board. Each step should have an explanation of what took place during that specific step.

Science Fair Schedule December 16- Project Ideas due February 2- Projects due to school at 8AM February 3-Parents Invited to view projects and awards ceremony

Scientific Method Problem Hypothesis Experiment Observation Report Conclusion

Problem State the Problem or ask a question. What you think will happen. The scientific method starts when you ask a question about something that you observe: How, What, When, Who, Which, Why, or Where?

Hypothesis Make a Hypothesis (prediction) of what you think will happen. A hypothesis is an educated guess about how things work: "If _____[I do this] _____, then _____[this]_____ will happen."

Experiment Do the Experiment. To test a hypothesis, scientists do an experiment.

Observation Make Observations and record data. Observations are only what you see, hear, or measure.

Conclusion State your Conclusion. A conclusion is a summary that explains your data.

Finding a project · · · ·

Tri-fold Board Display Title of Project 1.Problem Identify a problem What do you want to find out 2. Hypothesis Make an intelligent guess What do you think will happen 3. Materials List materials you used 4. Procedures What were the steps you used to solve the problem? 5. Data Collect Data from trials and test 6. Results What happened when you did your experiment 7. Conclusions Answer to your problem What did you learn from your experiment and how is it related to your life?
