Expectorants By: Shelby Stewart 5/6/09

What Are Expectorants? A medication that helps bring up mucus and other materials from the lungs, bronchi, and trachea.

Examples of Expectorants 1.Robitussin – Guaifenesin 2. Yodefan - Potassium Iodide 3. Mucinex – Guaifenesin

What are the risks and Benefits? Risks - Some expectorant preparations contain iodides (potassium iodide) that may result in the development of a goiter (swollen thyroid gland), a severe rash, or salivary gland inflammation. These medications are not recommended for use in children, pregnant women, or individuals with thyroid conditions. Guaifenesin may cause nausea and vomiting. Benefits – Being achiest and feverish is no fun when you have a cold but it is better to take an expectorant to help you loosen and cough up all the phlegm.

Side Effects Dizziness, drowsiness, headache, loss of appetite, nausea, stomach upset or dry mouth may occur the first several days as your body adjusts to the medication. If any of these effects continue or become bothersome, inform your doctor. Notify your doctor if you develop: chest pain, rapid pulse, skin rash, high blood pressure, difficulty urinating, tremors, nervousness, trouble breathing. To avoid dizziness and lightheadedness when rising from a seated or lying position, get up slowly. Also limit your intake of alcoholic beverages which will aggravate these effects.

Drug Interactions Tell your doctor of any nonprescription or prescription medication you may take including: high blood pressure medicine, antidepressants, sedatives, tranquilizers, sleeping pills, cimetidine, narcotic pain medications.

How it is given? Take this medication by mouth as prescribed. Be sure to follow instructions closely. Do not increase your dose or take this more often than directed. If stomach upset occurs, this may be taken after a meal or snack. If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
