Diversity in Atmospheric Science Melissa Burt Diversity and Higher Education Manager Raj Pandya SOARS Director External Advisory Panel Meeting September 29, 2008 Melissa Burt Diversity and Higher Education Manager Raj Pandya SOARS Director External Advisory Panel Meeting September 29, 2008

Diversity Astronomy –Has the largest representation of females of any branch physics –How does Astronomy do this? Early Astronomers at Harvard Atmospheric Science –Small representation of ethnic minorities, better with gender –Why is Atmospheric Science so different from other science fields? Bjerknes, Charney, Lorenz, and Rossby

External Advisory Panel Q: How can the field of Atmospheric Science increase its diversity? Q: How can CMMAP play a role without recreating the wheel?

Possible solutions… Bring a diverse group of people into CMMAP and let them explore. –High School Students 2 week summer camp Introduce them to CMMAP research and CSU. –High School Teachers Teacher workshop Teacher’s participate in CMMAP research –Community College students 2 week internship during the winter session to take part in CMMAP research

Possible solutions… –Summer Undergraduate Interns Currently doing this and plan on expanding the program. Working with SOARS and their interns. –CSU Undergraduates Work with LSAMP to get students from underrepresented groups. Participate in an independent study with CMMAP faculty. –Faculty/graduate students Faculty and their graduate students from MSIs collaborate with CMMAP faculty at CSU and partner institutions.
