1 Update on Service Learning to the University Engagement Workgroup Presented by L. Preston Mercer Vice President and CEO Lakeland Campus May 20, 2003

2 Service Learning Update – College of Arts & Sciences Interdisciplinary Social Sciences – As part of a class assignment, undergraduate students have been engaged in the collection and analysis of data to determine the state of “elder- readiness” of Polk, Highlands and Hardee Counties – As part of a class assignment, undergraduate students have been engaged in the development of and the presentation of training sessions for Caregivers in Polk County in a joint venture with Polk County Elderly Service and the Westcoast Area Agency on Aging Masters in Social Work – Practicum/Internship class at a Community Agency under the supervision of licensed social worker and faculty

3 Service Learning Update – Colleges of Business and Engineering General Business Administration – Through the Career Center at the Lakeland Campus, we are engaging local businesses to encourage opportunities for students to participate in internships and coop experiences. These may be paid or unpaid and may for may not be used for college credit. The student is supervised either by the business partner individually (if not for credit) or jointly by the business partner and faculty.

4 Service Learning Update – College of Education Elementary Education and Special Education – Internship courses: Level 1, 2, and 3; Course requirements range from one day per week to full time for the semester. Students are supervised by supervising teacher and faculty Counselor Education – Practicum/Internship course assigns student to work in a community setting supervised by a community partner and faculty Education Leadership – Practicum experience currently being developed that will require a student to shadow a school administration and be assigned administrative duties to be completed as part of the course requirements. Student will be supervised by the administrator and faculty.

5 Service Learning Update – College of Undergraduate Studies Information Technology – As part of a class assignment, undergraduate students have been engaged with the community in the adapting of computers to make them more accessible for the disabled (specifically, the blind) – Internship class specific to the students’ chosen concentration area (i.e., IT at a medical facility, IT at an educational institution, IT in a retail environment) supervised by assigned business partner and faculty. Interdisciplinary Leadership Minor – Practicum course allows students to create a community-based project which is planned and executed in coordination with a community partner. Student is supervised by faculty.
