June 24, 2015| Slide 3 OFFICE OF SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION How are you, Smarter Balanced-wise?  The most challenging test administration season is over!  Data files are being generated, preparing for analysis.  Student and Test/District/School/Technology Coordinator surveys were available beginning in May. Results will be summarized in July.  If your district collected its own feedback and you would like to share with OSPI, please forward.  The year will be less challenging.

June 24, 2015| Slide 4 OFFICE OF SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION What is happening, Smarter Balanced-wise? Summer months will be busy with….  Data analyses  UAAG Discussion with Smarter Balanced  Establishing graduation cut scores for ELA and math  Updates to TIDE, ORS, THSS, TDS  Preparations for a late-August ‘go-live’  New Update Webinar series for  Setting dates for all training webinars (secure browser, TIDE, THSS, TDS)

June 24, 2015| Slide 6 OFFICE OF SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION General Updates  As of June 15, over 1,000,000 online tests were administered  Probably another 100,000 paper tests Congratulations to all in Washington!!

June 24, 2015| Slide 7 OFFICE OF SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION Reporting of Scores  Individual student reports available through Online Reporting System (ORS):  Score reports include  Overall score, level (1–4), and Achievement Level Descriptors  Comparison to district and state proficiency  Paper/pencil tests  Smarter Balanced will calibrate paper to online in early July  Scores from paper/pencil Smarter Balanced tests (grades 4–HS) will be available late July

June 24, 2015| Slide 8 OFFICE OF SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION Printed Individual Score Reports (ISRs)  Hard copy reports will be shipped to districts for distribution to families  Delivery estimated September 7–9  Reports are later this year than in future years due to standard setting for EOCs

June 24, 2015| Slide 9 OFFICE OF SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION Feedback from the 1 st year  The Good  Technology was good – test engine far better than previous years  Teachers are excited about scores being available  Favorable reviews of interim assessments, if tried  The Bad  Inadequate technology, so it took too many days to have everyone tested  Test length a concern with writing assessed at each grade (though shorter than previous tests in grades 4 and 7)  The Ugly  Greatest criticism is from some teachers

June 24, 2015| Slide 10 OFFICE OF SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION Refusals  Refusal counts available after July 4 th  Estimates:  <5% in grades 3-8  ~50% in grade 11  Refusals count in the denominator for school accountability, and count against participation rates

June 24, 2015| Slide 11 OFFICE OF SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION Score Release  Statewide score release Aug 17 th  New baseline  Proficiency rates will include:  Of those who took the test  Of those required to take (includes refusals in denominator)  Sample score reports for parents ahead of receipt of scores  Need to ensure districts can address next steps – what does this mean for my child?

Interim Assessments

June 24, 2015| Slide 18 OFFICE OF SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION Interim Assessment Components Interim Assessments Interim Comprehensive Assessment (ICA) Interim Assessment Blocks (IAB)

June 24, 2015| Slide 19 OFFICE OF SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION Interim Assessments Optional assessments administered in grades 3-8 and high school At the high school level, the assessments are consistent with the grade 11 summative design and may be administered in grades 9, 10, 11, and/or 12. Allow schools and teachers to check in on student progress and provide information to inform instruction Flexible administration options Interim Comprehensive Assessments use the same design as the summative assessments, assess the same range of standards, and provide scores on the same scale. Interim Assessment Blocks focus on smaller sets of related standards and provide more detailed information (than interim) for instructional purposes.

June 24, 2015| Slide 20 OFFICE OF SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION Interim Assessment Features  Optional for districts  Items drawn from same pool as Summative; full array of item types including performance tasks  Can be administered at various points in the year  Online administration – same system as summative  Adhere to Usability, Accessibility, and Accommodations Guidelines  Adaptive when feasible (likely )  Not intended for accountability decisions

June 24, 2015| Slide 21 OFFICE OF SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION Interim Assessment Scoring and Reporting  Online Reporting System (ORS)  Interim Comprehensive Assessment (ICA)  Report same information as Summative Assessment  Overall composite scale score  Achievement levels  Claim level information  Interim Assessment Blocks (IABs)  Report information consistent with claim level information  Item level reporting is a future feature (not on current work plan)
