“Express and Reflect” “Back in the Day” How I expressed my feelings and reflected on my past and what it meant to my future Expressive Writing – it is personal writing The writer shares thoughts, ideas, feelings, and questions about his or her experiences. It is written in the 1 st person so it showes the author’s voice. The author tells the reader how he or she feels. Reflective Writing it is also personal, but it moves beyond remembering the past and looking at how it will affect the writer’s future.

Today you will… Start your writing unit on expressive and reflective writing with something ALL of us can do without too much pain

What is a memoir? What words do you know closely connected to “Memoir”? What do you consider to be your “life story”? Would you need to write a novel to explain everything, or could you tell about one event that helped shape you as a person?

After reading/seeing some six-word memoirs, what surprises you about this style of writing? Can you recall a memory that might express some emotions? Can you reflect on that memory and learn something from it? How is it both possible express and reflect who you are into six words? How can you inspire others to do something or believe something with only six words?

Six Tips for Writing a Six Word Memoir 1.It only works if it’s personal. 2.Limitations force you to be creative. 3.Get inspired by reading other memoirs. 4.Write about what is important to you. Express your feelings and reflect a lesson learned. 5.Put the six best words in the best order. 6.Publish your memoir to inspire others.

More Examples: All things considered, I’m doing well. The past is forgiven, not forgotten. Escaped my mother. Trapped by girlfriend. So the water’s deep. Man up. You’re never the same person again. (Students from 2011) Some written by Mrs. Young: Up at 4:00; family is hard. Teach, grade, travel, coach, write: tired. Didn’t quite work out. I’m glad. Read a book; smarter than yesterday. Failure often leads to great success. Thinking about six words is hard.

Now it’s your turn… Draft 3 to 5 different six word memoirs you could use to explain something important in your life.

Visuals What type of visual would you use to enhance your memoir? Make a sketch of what you envision on your paper.

Time to Publish! Tonight, turn your memoir into a powerpoint slide. You may use visuals from clip art, the internet, or from a photograph you have saved on your computer. me your final memoir : If you do not have Powerpoint on your home computer, we will either do it here at school, or you can create it on paper and I can scan it into the powerpoint. I will publish your memoirs into a 7a powerpoint presentation for all to view. Some may even be published in the school yearbook!
