READERS’ WORKSHOP This curriculum includes the rigorous expectations for achievement as outlined in the Common Core State Standards. This new curriculum reflects the understanding that reading and writing are of a reciprocal nature.

Writing Units Personal Narratives- Develop a real experience or event using effective technique, descriptive details and clear event sequence. Poetry- Descriptive Language, Simile, Metaphor, Imagery, Word Choice Personal Essay – An opinion piece with a point of view that is rooted in personal experience. Feature Article – A short research project that builds knowledge about a topic. The focus is on note-taking, organization and elaborating on the big ideas using details, facts and definitions. Students will NOT bring the feature article to publication quality. Travel Article – The focus of this unit is on the crafting strategies used in nonfiction writing: conveying a sense of audience and purpose, balancing fact and opinion and using voice to add interest.
