MR. WALKER’S 7 TH GRADE HONORS ENGLISH March 2, 2015 Lessons & Objectives

JOURNAL The book Kiln People by David Brin, "is about a society where you can create clay copies of yourself to do various tasks (menial, dangerous) while you do something else, then at the end of the day, you download their memroies back into you." If you had ten copies of yourself to use today, what would have you have them do? Be specific!

WORD OF THE DAY menial any work which does not require much skill and lacks prestige Mr. Walker’s assignments never seemed MENIAL to me.

LINES WE LOVE “Willow Springs. Everybody knows but nobody talks about the legend of Sapphira Wade. A true conjure woman: satin black, biscuit cream, read as Georgia clay: depending upon which of us takes a mind to her. She could walk through a lightning storm without being touched; grab a bolt of lightning in the palm of her hand; use the heat of the lightning to start the kindling going under her medicine pot: depending on which of us takes a mind to her. She turned the moon into slave, the stars into a swaddling cloth, and healed the wounds of every creature walking up on two or down on four.” ~Gloria Naylor, Mama Day

OBJECTIVES FOR TODAY Block 1 Finish reviewing correct answers from the Mock STAAR test. Understand why the correct answer was correct. Understand why the incorrect answer was not. Ask questions. Talk about it. Take notes while you’re reviewing!! Make sure you understand why you missed what you missed before you leave! Block 2 Finish our discussion of Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl. We will make inferences and draw conclusions about the characters, setting, and theme. We will discuss how each is interconnected and will make connections to other portions of the book and outside the text.

MOCK STAAR REVIEW Take notes Ask questions Understand why you missed the questions you missed Think about strategies you could’ve used to answer correctly Make an assessment of where you are. Tell me:  What areas you need to improve  What areas you’re most comfortable with  What I can do to help you improve

ANNE FRANK: DIARY OF A YOUNG GIRL Finish discussing Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl in class. Think about setting, characters, and theme especially. How does the setting influence characters? What themes are present? How do the characters interact? Why is it important to the story?

TOMORROW WE WILL... Review specific areas and skills which need improvement. Get the first essay prompt for our essays challenge. Go to the library to work on Awesome Authors Project.

HOMEWORK No homework.
