The concept gained popularity and was open format, anybody could edit, add correct, delete, etc. It became a source of community with its own monitors connected with the site. He thought about copyright but decided against it. Commercial sites use this as marketing, with free pages supplied if you endure the advertising or you can pay to make it a closed wiki within a limited scope of users.
