Grammar Words List #1 Take notes *those slides without examples of sentences, you will be in charge of making your own sentence.

Analyze To break down a quote or idea in order to understand the meaning behind it. I analyzed the data from the science experiment.

Argue To challenge or debate an issue or idea with the purpose of persuading someone else. I argued with my mom that I shouldn’t be grounded.

Cite/citation To document the source of where information included in your writing was found. Information that does not come from you is quoted and the source (book, article, website, etc.) and page number are written down.

Compare/ Contrast Finding similarities and differences between two ideas.

Conclude To draw your own meaning after careful and thoughtful reading.

Demonstrate To use examples/quotes from reading material to prove ideas. The main character demonstrated kindness when she gave the boy money.

Describe To tell in words what a person is like or to show an idea or impression of something.

Evaluate To judge an idea, character, quote, etc. that you read about in a careful or thoughtful way.

Evidence An idea or specific quote which shows or proves that something else is true.

Infer To make a good guess based upon evidence in a reading and ones prior knowledge. I infer that Esperanza is very close with her sister because she’s always with her.
