1 Depth of Knowledge Vocabulary LIST 1 OBJECTIVE: THE PURPOSE OF THIS LESSON IS TO HELP STUDENT LEARN HOW TO DISSECT LANGUAGE IN ORDER TO BETTER UNDERSTAND QUESTION BY USING ACADEMIC VOCABULARY! I KNOW THEY’VE LEARNED IT WHEN THEY PASS WEEKLY EXAMS ON VOCABULARY COMPREHENSION.

2 Describe  to tell or depict in written or spoken words; gi ve an account of:  Describe chronologically the events of yesterday morning.  Chronologically:  Chrono means?  So Chronologically means?

3 Trace  to follow, or determine the course or line of, especially by going backward from the latest evidence, nearest existence, etc.:  Trace six major stops along the Mormon Trail.

4 Analyze  to examine carefully and in detail so as to identify causes, key factors, possible results, point of view, credibility, and omissions, etc.  Analyze the needs that would be required to build a new dam in Utah.

5 Compare  to examine (two or more objects, ideas, people, etc.) in order to note similarities  Compare the Utah constitution to the United States constitution.

6 Contrast  to examine in order to show unlikeness or differences; note the opposite natures, purposes, etc.  Contrast the physical and chemical changes.

7 Explain  to assign a meaning to; interpret, to make clear.  Explain the system of classification.

8 Infer, Inferring, Inference  To draw a conclusion based on background knowledge, and existing evidence or data  Infer from the text the shift in the protagonists motivation.

9 Summarize  Using your own words to state the main idea and most important details in a simplified form.  Summarize the skills or abilities you use in your favorite past time.

10 Support (sometimes support is stated as: give evidence that, use data to show, etc.)  To maintain or uphold an idea and prove its worth or relevance, provide evidence, data, details, elaborations, etc.  Use evidence from the article which supports the author’s point of view.

11 Evaluate  to determine or set the value or amount of; appraise: to evaluate property.  to judge or determine the significance, worth, or quality of; assess:  Evaluate the effectiveness of a simple machine.

12 Formulate  to devise or develop, as a method, system, etc.  to express in precise form; state definitely or systematically:  Formulate a plan to safely evacuate your home in the event of an emergency.

13 Interpret  to give or provide the meaning of; explain; explicate; elucidate:  Interpret the results of your lab experiment.

14 Predict  to declare or tell in advance; prophesy; foretell:  Predict how well you will do on your next vocabulary test.

15 Represent  To stand for, or to be used in place of.  to speak and act for by delegated authority:  Which quote best represents the attitude of the character?

16 Defend  to maintain by argument, evidence, etc.; uphold:  Defend the actions of the United States in moving Native Americans off their land.

17 Suggested Learning Activity: Ranking Frequency  Ask the students to look at the list of words, and rank them from 1 to 15 (1 is the most frequent, 15 is the least frequent) for how often they see, hear, or use these words. Have students explain their answers.

18 Suggested Learning Activity Categorize by Content  For the following content areas:  Math  Science  Social Studies  Language Arts Sort this vocabulary list by frequency of use.

19 Vocabulary Learning Activity Suggestion: “We’re Experts” (Dr. Janet Allen)  You need groups, each group gets 2 or 3 words which they must become experts on. Each group gets one large card for each word they are assigned. One the front of the card:On the back of the card: We’re experts on (assigned word)Illustration of the Word: Notes:Points for Presentation: Our thoughts /Connections:Sources/Citations: Important Names, Dates, Places Synonyms
