Assessment Literacy Interim Assessment Kansas State Department of Education ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT1

Kansas State Department of Education ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT Essential Questions 2 What are the differences between a formative, summative and an interim assessment? Why do we give assessments and what are the criteria we use to determine a good assessment? What does the Kansas Interim Assessment program look like and how do we implement it in our building, classroom or district? How do we interpret and use the results from the Kansas Interim Assessment to drive instructional decisions in the classroom?

ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT Kansas State Department of Education ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT3 What is Assessment? Formative Summative Portfolio Criterion-referenced Norm-referenced Interim Performance Diagnostic Authentic

ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT Kansas State Department of Education ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT Key Terms – Summative 4 Assessment –Summative Assessment –given at the end; used to judge the final quality and quantity of student achievement and /or the success of the instructional program (sum it up) –Assessment of learning –Examples: Kansas Math Assessment, Kansas Reading Assessment, Semester Exam, etc.

ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT Kansas State Department of Education ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT Key Terms – Formative 5 Assessment –Formative Assessment – checkpoints of learning; snapshots; used to inform instruction and essential learning; periodic collection of information to provide feedback concerning progress toward achieving learning goals; provides the information needed to adjust teaching and learning while they are happening (inform along the way) –Assessment for learning!

ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT Kansas State Department of Education ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT A Thought… 6 “When the cook tastes the soup, that's formative. When the guests taste the soup, that's summative.” Robert Stake

ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT Kansas State Department of Education ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT Interim Assessment 7 Evaluate students’ knowledge and skills relative to a specific set of goals or indicators Assessment of and for learning Administered between formative and summative assessments Predicts achievement Benchmark

ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT Kansas State Department of Education ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT Activity One 1 Define Assessment by answering the essential question: What are the differences between Formative, Summative and Interim Assessment?

ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT Kansas State Department of Education ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT Why do we assess? 8 diagnosing students’ strengths and weaknesses (needs) monitoring students’ progress Using data to guide or “drive” the instruction we provide (tool for learning)

ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT Kansas State Department of Education ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT Why do we assess? determining one’s own instructional effectiveness curriculum needs assigning grades, placement BECAUSE of district, state, and federal requirements 9

ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT Kansas State Department of Education ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT10 Criteria for a good assessment aligned to the curriculum designed prior to instruction matches instruction tests what is taught drives instructional decisions

ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT Kansas State Department of Education ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT11 If we want to use assessment as a tool for learning… We must be able to answer… What is it we want all students to learn? How will we know when each student has mastered the essential learning? How will we respond when a student experiences difficulty in learning? How will we deepen the learning for students who have already mastered the essential knowledge and skills?

ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT Kansas State Department of Education ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT Activity Two complete Activity Two: Who do we give assessments and what are the criteria we use to determine a good assessment? 2

ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT Kansas State Department of Education ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT12 Begin with the End in Mind… KS Math Assessment – April (Summative) CETE Formative Assessments – (on-going assessments to monitor student learning of targeted indicators) KS Interim Assessments (3 data points/benchmarks)

ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT Kansas State Department of Education ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT15 CETE Formative Assessments If a formative assessment is that along the way assessment if it helps teachers determine next steps during the learning process How do we use the CETE Formative assessment? Are you using the CETE formative assessments? How do you use the CETE formative site?

ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT Kansas State Department of Education ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT16 CETE Formative Assessments Peak usage…for the formative site is in Feb. and March

ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT Kansas State Department of Education ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT18 Kansas Interim Assessment Designed as a tool teachers may use to gauge the progress their students have made with regard to the tested indicators at their grade level. Provides an estimate of achievement on tested indicators at three different points prior to the administration of the KS assessment

ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT Kansas State Department of Education ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT19 Kansas Interim Assessment Administered online using the KCA site Takes one class period to administer Designed as a multi-stage adaptive test. –Multiple choice –Each test consists of three parts –Students will receive more challenging or less challenging parts based on their responses to previous parts during the test session

ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT Kansas State Department of Education ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT23 A Thought… “Until you have data as a backup, you’re just another person with an opinion.” Dr. Perry Gluckman

ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT Kansas State Department of Education ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT24 Interim Assessment Scores on the interim assessment will be on the same scale as scores on the KS assessment (NCLB) assessment for the same grade and subject. Scores are available electronically Class Roster Reports, Class Score Distribution, Indicator Information, etc.

ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT Kansas State Department of Education ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT Activity Three Activity three answers the essential question: What does the Kansas Interim Assessment Program look like and how do we implement it in our building, classroom or district? 3

ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT Kansas State Department of Education ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT27 Impacting Instruction… If a student received a 74 on the taught indicators and a 34 on the entire test…what does that mean? –Students understood most of the concepts that were taught –With regular “cyclic review” of the taught items you may not need to dig any deeper. Interim 2 will help you see if the concepts are still understood! –Cyclic review – daily math warm-ups (3-4 problems)

ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT Kansas State Department of Education ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT28 Impacting Instruction… However… If a student received a 44 on the taught indicators and a 34 on the entire test…what does that mean? –The student did not understand that concepts that were taught! –Use formative assessments – before/after –Specific re-teaching of indicators, “daily cyclic review” of the taught items

ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT Kansas State Department of Education ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT29 Goal Setting, Test Talks… Students should have the opportunity to see their results and set goals for the next assessment. Teacher, principal test talks are another way to help students understand and focus on learning needs. Sample goal: I want to improve my score from a 44 to a 70 on the interim assessment given in December. I will improve my score by asking my teacher for help on daily lessons when I don’t understand. I will do my homework. I will check over my work.

ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT Kansas State Department of Education ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT30a Goal Setting and Test Talks… Allow students to reflect on their learning Have students keep charts to “track” their learning Interim1Goal Interim 2 Interim 2 Score Goal Interim 3 Interim 3 score Goal for KS Math KS Math Score

ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT Kansas State Department of Education ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT30b Interim Assessment

ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT Kansas State Department of Education ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT31 Some Thoughts… Curriculum What is it we want all students to learn? Assessment Summative Interim Formative Instruction What strategies will lead to better understanding? Interim data “big picture” leads to more diagnosis. What will I do differently in my instruction?

ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT Kansas State Department of Education ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT32-33 Think Time…Assessment The term assessment is derived from the Latin root assidere meaning “to sit beside” a broad term referring to the process of gathering and synthesizing information “Testing” is one type of assessment!

Kansas State Department of Education ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT34 AND…if good assessment drives instruction! We must be a good consumer, armed with knowledge about assessment! You are what you assess!

ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT Kansas State Department of Education ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT Activity Four 4 Activity four helps you reflect on the essential question: How will you use the Interim assessment to improve student learning if you classroom, building or district?
