Theme Remembering the manner and value of the Lord’s death increases our faithfulness to Him.

Introduction: Helping Us To Remember – The Paradoxes A statement or event that looks reasonable enough but leads to a conclusion that makes no sense or contradicts itself. We have bigger houses, but smaller families It shocks us but at the same time stays in our mind We buy more, but enjoy it less. We spend more, but have less Its purpose is to make us think and to keep on thinking We have more medicine, but less wellness

It forces us to look deeper and see an important truth or principle. 2 Cor. 6:9,10 We are well known, but we are treated as unknown. We live close to death, but here we are, still alive. (We have been beaten within an inch of our lives!) Our hearts ache, but we always have joy. We are poor, but we give spiritual riches to others. We own nothing, and yet we have everything.

…the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some sly way to arrest Jesus and kill him. 14:1b

1. Jesus had amazing power, generosity and love, yet they plan to kill Him. 14:1b …the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some sly way to arrest Jesus and kill him. The Great Truth: Jealousy in humans is very destructive.

2. Jesus’ followers love His life, but they prepare for His death. 3b …a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume… broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head. 6b …said Jesus. “Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me… 8 She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial. The Great Truth: Faithful followers of Jesus embrace His will wherever it leads

3. Men do not carry water jars but they were led by one who did. 12b …Jesus’ disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover?” 13b …[Jesus] tells them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. The great truth: Jesus plans, but does so in a way to reveal His divinity

4. Jesus reveals betrayal but gives them the ultimate gift of life. 18b Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, one of you will betray me--one who is eating with me.” 22b “Take it; this is my body.” 24a “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many” The Great Truth: Jesus loves us way beyond our failure

5. Jesus predicts their desertion but loves them anyway. 27 “You will all fall away,” Jesus told them, “for it is written: “‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’ The Great Truth: Jesus loves us way beyond our fears

6. Jesus offers heart-wrenching prayer, but the disciples sleep through it 34 “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,” he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.” 35 Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him. 36 “Abba, Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.” 37 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping Great Truth #1: Jesus will keep doing His work even when we quit Great Truth #2: Praying persistently is our greatest work

7. Jesus reveals His faithfulness and love, but is betrayed with a Kiss! 45 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Rabbi!” and kissed him. 46 The men seized Jesus and arrested him. The Great Truth: Humans hide their sin with distractions but Jesus sees through it all.
