Lesson 3 Data Storage

Objectives Define data storage Identify the difference between short-term and long-term data storage Understand cloud storage and why it’s important Describe how data is stored and moved

Data Storage When information is saved by a computer. Two types: Short-term/ temporary Long-term

Random Access Memory RAM Short-term storage for the computer “Random accessing”, writing, or deleting of information in RAM is very fast Information used by the CPU is stored in RAM RAM is also called “working memory” Data in RAM is not saved when the computer is turned off

Long-term Memory Where all the information not being used by the CPU is stored Information can be added to and deleted from long-term storage Information remains when the computer is turned off Found on storage devices: ex. CDs, DVDs, Blu-Rays, memory cards, USB flash drives The user tells the computer where to store files and other information

Cloud Storage If you access anything that isn’t stored on your computer or an external device, you are accessing “the cloud”. Cloud storage uses the Internet to upload and save your data to an online space.

Why Cloud Storage? Anytime Access- Once logged in, data can be accessed by any computer, anywhere in the world. Ease of Use- Typically with cloud storage, you designate a folder on your computer to be automatically synced to the cloud. Backup- Putting files in the cloud helps ensure you have a duplicate copy of files. Document Sharing- Easily share files and documents. Makes collaboration easier.

Summary Define data storage Identify the difference between short-term and long-term data storage Understand cloud storage and why it’s important Describe how data is stored and moved
