Lesson Objectives To understand what causes static charge. To appreciate some of the uses of static electricity To appreciate some of the dangers of electricity To know what static electricity is

Static Electricity There are two types of electric charge, POSITIVE and NEGATIVE Negative charge is made up of electrons from the outside of atoms

Static Electricity Positive charge is made up from protons. Protons are usually found in the nucleus of atoms.

Static Electricity Some materials become charged because friction cause electrons to be pulled off one material and transferred to another material.

Static Electricity Only electrons can move. Protons are “stuck” in the middle of atoms. Materials that have a positive charge are usually things that have “lost” electrons (not gained protons).

Static electricity You will be given some different materials. See which combination of materials you can use to lift small pieces of paper.
