Ch. 21 - Electricity I. Electric Charge  Atoms and Charge  Conductors  Insulators  Static Electricity  Electric Discharge

A. Atoms and Charge  Atoms  All matter is made of small particles called atoms Proton Electron Neutron - + + -

A. Atoms and Charge  Electric Force  force between charged objects  Electric Field  the region around the charged particle that can exert a force on another charged particle  Law of Electric Charge  opposite charges attract  like charges repel

A. Atoms and Charge  Friction  Rubbing two objects together can cause electrons to be transferred from one object to the other  Conduction  Electrons are transferred from one object to another by direct contact  Induction  Charges in an uncharged object are rearranged without direct contact with a charged object

B. Conductors  Conductor  material that allows electrons to move through it easily  electrons are loosely held  ex: metals like copper and silver

C. Insulators  Insulator  material that doesn’t allow electrons to move through it easily  electrons are tightly held  ex: plastic, wood, rubber, glass

D. Static Electricity  Static Electricity  the net accumulation of electric charges on an object

E. Electric Discharge  The loss of static electricity as charges move off an object
