NMED 3700 Project Management

NMED 3700 Today’s Class… Team Strategies, Roles & Responsibilities

NMED 3700 Super Media Brothers Brawl

NMED 3700 Super Media Brothers Brawl –Serious challenge Most complicated event presented May garner the biggest payoff

NMED 3700 Super Media Brothers Brawl –Class Challenge Your theme is a commercial and copyrighted reference. –This potential copyright infringement is an issue The video games will likely overshadow the art. –In order to be successful this event will need to be more than a video game round robin –Guitar Hero does not promote the excellence of New Media students in a professional manner Finding original works by students that fit with the theme across departments and faculties may be difficult. –Many students make strong work that has nothing to do with gaming »Will this make the programming job easier or difficult?

NMED 3700 Super Media Brothers Brawl –Class Challenge Never lose sight of the fact that gaming is merely a theme. The goal has not changed. This class must…

NMED 3700 Stage a New Media Showcase to Promote the Excellent Work Generated by New Media Students

NMED 3700 Team Challenges –Communications & Marketing –To Do: Choose a new name for the event that embraces the theme of gaming but makes clear this event is a showcase of students’ original work. The new name can make vague allusion to commercial gaming but should not mislead the audience about what they can expect. »I.e. Super Media Students Blowout »Draft at least three logo/poster design mock-ups that feature the new title to present to the class for selection next Monday »Decide who is responsible for poster design, website architecture and maintenance, photo and design documentation and archiving

NMED 3700 Team Challenges –Resource Management & Audience Development –To Do: Create a strategy that exploits the target audience’s enthusiasm about commercial gaming and that can create the same enthusiasm about work created by New Media students –Decide who will be Team Leader for fundraising, volunteer recruitment/public relations, and venue management. –Begin thinking about ways of how the gaming theme can be used: »for fundraisers »to catch the interest of volunteers and audiences »can be integrated into the event venue(s) leading up to and during the event

NMED 3700 Team Challenges –Programming –To Do: Create a Strategy that embraces the theme of the gaming while finding 3-D, 2-D and video work by students to showcase the works within the parameters of the theme »Draft a call for submissions »Set a deadline »Draft a strategy for disseminating the call for submissions »Create a timeline for collecting works, viewing works, installing, screening and staging »Consider location and venue design –Decide who will be Team Leader for traffic coordination of work, collection of catalogue information, technical support management, artist relations

NMED 3700 It all comes down to this process… managing Project Outcome doing planning controllingmonitoring

NMED 3700 From this day forward… Mondays from 4:00-4:50 are for Lectures, Team Progress Reports and Questions –Team Progress Reports are vitally important. Each team will need information and support from the others and vice versa Mondays from 4:50-5:50 are for Team Meetings/Activity Wednesdays are for Lectures, Trouble-shooting Roundtables from 4:00-4:50 –I will check in with each team to discuss and problems or roadblocks Wednesdays from 4:50-5:50 are for Team Meetings/Activity

NMED 3700 Always Remember Your Project Log… Each Team Meeting Must have a facilitator. Someone must keep a record of items discussed in meetings.

NMED 3700 Project Log Entries The Role of Facilitator Should be A Rotating Role The facilitator records the official “minutes” of the meeting –Record: Date, Time, Location, Names of Participants At the top of the page record the agenda question: What Kind of Event Should We Present Underneath that make your laundry list of ideas and related details Make it legible because everyone in the group will need a copy

NMED 3700 Project Log Entries When you conduct Project Management activities individually, outside class time or off campus DO NOT forget to make a Project Log entry of that activity. Everything you do in this class that relates to the staging of a New Media Showcase to Promote the Excellent Work Generated by New Media Students contributes to your final grade. In order for the activity to be acknowledged and evaluated it must be reflected in a Project Log entry. Activities may include but are not limited to: –making presentations on campus about the Project Management event –Meetings and correspondence with UofL faculty or staff related to the event –Meetings and correspondence with Lethbridge community members related to the event
