WA Support Group Infrastructure Project Presented by Gloria Kraegel Brain Energy Support Team

Presentation Overview Introduction to Project Support Group Update Training Update Direct Funding Update Next Steps Questions

Introduction Project began in 2010 Goal is to ensure support, training, and social opportunities are available for support group facilitators and support group members in WA State. Currently maintain regular contact with facilitators of 61 brain injury support groups (47 open and 14 specialty) Develop collaborative relationships with other organizations, agencies, and others Administer direct funds to 42 support groups

Support Group Update Support Groups have doubled since 2010 Specialty groups are forming based on interest or need More groups are engaging in community activities and legislative advocacy Facilitators are reaching out to collaborate with other support groups in their areas

Training Update Present training webinars Conduct three regional, in-person trainings Host monthly online support group meetings for facilitators

Direct Funding Update BEST now administers distribution of state mini-grants from the TBI fund to support groups. Create a needs-based budget with each facilitator Distribute funds via pre-paid VISA cards or a limited access bank account. Assist facilitators with annual budget and grant request process.

Next Steps Continue to do outreach to underserved populations Continue to do outreach in rural communities Continue to support facilitators Expand TV & radio outreach to raise community awareness of support groups Find increased funding for groups and services that have been created under this contract
