Presentation transcript:

Enhancing partnership among Africa RISING, NAFAKA and TUBORESHE CHAKULA Programs for fast tracking delivery and scaling of agricultural technologies in Tanzania Haroon Sseguya Technology Scaling Specialist, IITA

Background Goal: Accelerate the scaling and delivery of agricultural technologies to improve smallholder maize- and rice- farming systems, household nutrition, and dietary practices in Tanzania Scaling - Expanding, adapting and sustaining successful policies, programs and projects in different places and over time to reach a greater number of people Partners: Africa RISING (IITA Lead), NAFAKA, TUBOCHA, national institutions, private sector

Objectives Better Crop Management Technologies Conserving Natural Resources Improving Household Nutrition Better Crops Reducing Food Wastage and Spoilage Community Empowerment and Sustainability

Targets  USAID FtF investments in the Zone of Influence:  having at least 47,000 households with access to the technologies to diversify and increase their food supply and income sources, and improve the quality of degrading smallholder cropland;  expanding the area under improved rice production technologies by at least 58,000 ha;  increasing yields of both maize and rice by 50% per unit area as a result of these technologies being adopted.

Scaling approach: Maize example Source: IITA (2014)

Scaling Framework Source: World Health Organization (2010)

Experiences The innovation:  Link of activities to project objectives and indicators  Involve farmers in selection of the best for their agroecosystem  Compatibility with farmers’ interests  Site selection very important Knowledge management  Clear indicators from the beginning  Standardized data collection procedures (use of DCFs, database for farmers)  Success stories  Exchange and monitoring visits

Emerging issues Farmer engagement/capacity building  Objective 5; not strong enough  Learn from successes and existing innovations (Innovation platforms in ‘mother’ Africa RISING)

Emerging issues Partnership:  Coordination among sub-teams  Active involvement of local institutions in activities  How to work with private sector for best results
