The artisans and the WSP 1

SafiSan Artisans Given that UBSUP is a demand driven project, in most cases, the landlords may opt to have their own artisans construct the toilets or choose from the list that is generated in the WSP offices The list will have artisans that will have been trained by the project to specifically construct the SafiSan toilets. To note: an artisan is able to be recognized (and included in the list) if they have been trained on the SafiSan toilet construction. 2

Why train the artisans? The SafiSan toilets (especially the UDDT) require specialized training. The artisan should be able to read the toilet drawings and interpret according to what is desired. If a landlord opts for their own artisan, they have to make sure that he/ she is able to construct the toilets according to the required standards in order to be able to receive the subsidy 3

Points to Note: (1) The artisan should be trained by the WSP during the artisan training. (the training will be financed by the WSP) If not trained, the artisan should be able to build the toilets according to standards. (constant monitoring by the WSP offices as well as the CRMs). Should be able to read the drawings Before any initial construction, the WSP should be notified of the intent to construct. The artisan can be involved in marketing of the project (help identify new SafiSan applicants) 4

Points to note: (2) The artisan can register to receive the subsidy incase the landlord/ landlady is not able. However, this should be agreed upon between the landlord and the artisan and a statement signed by both parties. The toilets should be complete with all the infrastructure needed (e.g. hand washing facility) before it can be considered complete. 5

Artisan/ WSP involvement: The artisan and WSP involvement will be during: The initial training During the construction (supervisory work offered by the WSP) When receiving the subsidy (in case the artisan is the one who had applied for the toilet on behalf of the landlord/ landlady) If there is a conflict between the artisan and the landlord which might require the intervention of the WSP 6

Thank you. Any questions? 7
