THE TECHNICAL WRITING PROCESS
Presentation transcript:

G OOD W RITING STARTS WITH G OOD R EADING ! As you read the Lesson, ask yourself questions: What do I already know about this? What is the main idea about this topic / paragraph What does this mean? Do I understand what the text is talking about? What does this remind me of? Where have I seen this before? What will happen, or be discussed next?

Taking Notes as you Read Read the objectives: this gives you a quick idea of main points to know. Read the Activity: this helps you focus on finding and taking notes on the information needed. Identify the main ideas: What is the big picture? What is the focus of this small section? Identify supporting detail: What examples and data are they giving to explain the main idea? Vocabulary: list each bolded, italicized, and unfamiliar word. Write the sentence in which it is found. Search the meaning in a dictionary. Make sure you chose the definition that fits the context of the sentence you have. In your head, substitute the definition where the word is and see if it still makes sense.

Writing Relies on the Information You Gather – it is up to you to arrange it and make it unique. Have your notes out. Have the objectives, directions, and rubric for the activity. Read all the examples for the activity. Identify the product (what are you to make): Editorial supporting Either NATURE OR Nurture (NOT both) Related to either the Cycle of Abuse OR Future Success.

TOPIC Nature vs. Nurture Cycle of Abuse Future Success MAIN POINT General topic information Detailed topic information Support & detail

Paragraph I: What question am I addressing? What is my position (my answer)? Why is this an important issue? Paragraph II: 2 to 3 examples of people you either know personally, have heard of through friends and family, or is a person from the media/print. What did they do – related to the point you are making. How does this behavior (action) related to your point? Paragraph III: What was the purpose of your writing? What was the main point you were making? Whit is this an important topic?

Now look at the format you are supposed to use & arrange your information. SPELL CHECK!!! Dear John Smith, editor of the Spectator, My name is Ling Chen. I am a 17-year-old high school senior. I am writing this letter in the hopes of shedding some light on the very debatable topic of nature versus nurture. I believe that children who have parents that are athletic tend to be athletic as well. I believe that we are what we are based upon the way in which we were made. I agree with the theory of nature as this theory goes along with the way in which I feel about genetic tendency. Our genetics are determined by parents. If a parent excels at something, their children are going to excel as well. The theory of nature versus nurture is a very debatable, often arguable topic. It is my hope that readers will see my story and not discredit nature. Let’s face it; we would never be here without our parents! Respectfully submitted, Linh Chen Sample Letter to the Editor
