IP What is power? © Oxford University Press 2011 In the scientific sense of transferring energy, a powerful person or device can do a lot of work in a short space of time. Power is the work done in a given time (or the rate of doing work).

IP What is power? © Oxford University Press 2011  As you change the controls on an electric cooker the electrical power to the heating element changes.  The higher the power the hotter the ring gets.  This is because more energy is being transformed from electrical energy to heat energy each second.

IP What is power? © Oxford University Press 2011 A more powerful car transforms more chemical energy (in the fuel) into kinetic energy per second. This means it can accelerate more rapidly to a high speed. Which of these cars are more powerful and which do you think would accelerate quicker and have a higher top speed?
