Force, Motion and Energy What is the relationship?

Matter and Energy Matter is anything that takes up space. Matter can also be changed into energy. Force is a push or pull caused by a transfer of energy.

Matter and Energy Energy is the ability to do work. Force x Distance = Work Microsoft Clipart

Forms of Energy There are 2 forms of energy. Potential and Kinetic Potential energy is stored energy. Kinetic energy involves motion. Microsoft Cliparts Microsoft Clipart

Potential and Kinetic Energy Consider a roller coaster. At the top, it has potential energy. The energy is stored just as the energy in the rubber band. It is energy waiting to be used for motion. As the roller coaster moves toward the bottom, kinetic energy increases along with the roller coaster’s speed.

Energy Transfer in a Roller Coaster

Potential and Kinetic Energy Now consider a human being Potential energy is stored in food. Chemical change produces heat energy. Food is fuel that gives us energy Microsoft Clipart

Energy in Food A calorie is a measure of the amount of energy. In food, energy is measured in thousands of calories or kilocalories.. Microsoft Clipart

Transferring Energy in Food Food is digested and stored in our bodies as potential energy. This potential energy can be transformed into kinetic energy as our bodies move and exercise. When you exercise, you get hot? What do you think is happening?

The Sun is a Source of Energy The sun’s energy becomes chemical energy and is stored in plants as potential energy. Microsoft Clipart

Forces in Living Things Seedling emergence Geotropism Phototropism Turgor pressure

Forces in Living Things The force of blood on the walls of arteries is known as blood pressure The human body forces food through the digestive system to absorb nutrients Used for energy to do work.
