 Objective: Students will be able to differentiate between the three states of matter.  Agenda:  DO NOW  Matter Notes/PowerPoint  Independent Practice  Exit Ticket

 What are the 3 Phases of Matter? There are 3 ways to organize matter based on the amount of energy in each. ▪ Solid ▪ Liquid ▪ Gas

 A solid is matter in which the molecules are very close together and cannot move around.  Matter that has a definite shape Which shows a solid?  Examples of solids include rocks, wood, and ice (frozen water).

 A liquid is matter in which the molecules are close together and move around slowly.  Matter that has a definite volume but takes the shape of its container.  Examples of liquids include drinking water, mercury at room temperature, and lava (molten rock).  Which shows a liquid?

 A gas is matter in which the molecules are widely separated, move around freely, and move at high speeds.  Matter that takes both the shape and volume of its container  Examples of gases include the gases we breathe (nitrogen, oxygen, and others), the helium in balloons, and steam (water vapor).  Which shows a gas?

 *ALL substances have different phases  For example, the 3 phases of water are:  Solid water: ICE  Liquid water: WATER  Gas water: WATER VAPOR

 *How do we move between the 3 different states of matter?  -By adding or taking away ENERGY
