1 Section 2.2 Review: “Matter & Energy”
Ch. 2: “Matter” Section 2.2 Review: “Matter & Energy”

2 1. Define energy Energy is the ability to change or move matter.

3 2. State the law of conservation of mass & the law of conservation of energy .
Mass cannot be created or destroyed. Matter cannot be created or destroyed.

4 3. List 2 examples for each of the 3 common states of matter.
solid--marble, brass liquid--water, mercury gas--oxygen, nitrogen

5 4. Rank the following in order of increasing strength of forces between molecules.
e. nitrogen gas c. water a. honey d. candle wax b. marble

6 5. Compare & contrast the shape & volume of solids, liquids, & gases.
Solids have a definite volume & definite shape. Liquids have a definite volume but no definite shape Gases have neither a definite volume nor a definite shape.

7 6. Predict which 2 of the following involve the same energy transfer
6. Predict which 2 of the following involve the same energy transfer. Assume that the same substance & the same mass is involved in all 4 processes. Evaporation & condensation are opposite processes that involve the same amount of energy transfer.

8 8. Creative Thinking: Describe a characteristic of gases, & use the kinetic theory to explain how a dog could find you by your scent. Gas particles have enough energy to move freely in all directions. Every time a person touches something, traces that are characteristic of that person are left behind. As those traces absorb energy and vaporize, a dog that has a keen sense of smell can detect them.
