English Ivy hedera helix By Madelyn

What is English Ivy? An invasive species There are four types It’s from Europe It is evergreen It is in woodlands and parks in the U.S. It lives in the understory, but can climb up to the canopy of places It takes over houses It covers our yards It crowds out wanted or native plants It strangles trees It increases the probability of erosion because of shallow roots

English Ivy is an invasive species It was brought here from Europe. It was brought to the U.S. in Colonial times. An invasive species is an animal or plant that is taken from it’s natural home and is taken to a place it doesn’t belong.

Following are pictures of English Ivy.

Why we don’t want English Ivy We don’t want English Ivy as it can crowd wanted native plants. It increases the probability of erosion and of trees falling. Additionally the roots dig into the wood and mortar of houses and buildings which weakens them.

About English Ivy It is an evergreen climbing plant, which covers surfaces that are available, and also growing as ground cover where there are no vertical surfaces. It climbs by means of aerial rootlets which cling to the substrate.

About English Ivy The flowers are produced from late summer until late autumn, individually small, they’re greenish- yellow, and very rich in nectar, an important late autumn food source for bees and other insects.

About English Ivy The fruit are purple-black to orange-yellow berries, ripening in late winter, and are an important food for many birds, though are somewhat poisonous to humans.

The green is English Ivy Look how it spreads!!!

Trees and native plants will be taken over by English Ivy

Until only English Ivy is left

DON’T PLANT ENGLISH IVY AND MAKE US SUFFER!
