ISR Training February 12, 2010

 Types of information you’ll find  Searching the website  Finding statistics using... ◦ Browse By Subject (Summary Tables and CANSIM) ◦ CANSIM (free retrieval)  Canadian Census

 Stats Canada web site is a source of: ◦ Statistics ◦ Analytical studies ◦ News and learning resources  Its newsletter, The Daily, and most of its serials and monographs are available on site for free. Access to this material generally dates back to 1996

 First line of communication with media and public  Issues news releases on current social and economic conditions and announces new products  Searchable bulletin - h as been published since 1932, and posted on the Web since June 1995

 You need data with interpretation  You need high-level, summary statistics

Let’s try the exercises...

 Summary Tables ◦ More detailed, but still high-level/aggregated ◦ Gives source of statistics (e.g., CANSIM table number, StatsCan catalogue number)  CANSIM ◦ More detailed, more options, less aggregated ◦ Locate tables and series easily ◦ Do NOT download  use CHASS

Let’s try the exercises...

 From the Library’s home page ( click on E-Data under Resources for Researchhttp://  Click on CANSIM (under Access to Data)  Click on CANSIM CHASS Main Menu

 Choose the search/retrieval option you need if you already know the table or series you want, you can access them directly through one of the bottom three options

 Search or browse for the table If searching text, fill in the form, selecting appropriate options, and click on the Submit button if browsing, click on the + to open up the subtopics and then click on the subtopic to get a list of available tables

 Retrieving the information When you have a table (or list of tables), click on by dimensions next to the table you want Select options Click on the submit button...

 Retrieving the information (cont’d) Select the series you want (by clicking the box beside the series or on select all) Click on the Add selected to the Series Cart button Fill in the form Click on the Retrieve all the Series from the Cart button

 Gathers information on the demographic, social and economic conditions of the country’s population  Canada’s largest survey, with over 13.5 million households receiving the 2006 Census.  Provides a statistical representation of the country and its people.

 By Topic – choose from the Topic List  By Date – Census Trends  By Place – Choose Community Profiles or Census Track Profiles

 These profiles present community-level information from the 2006 Census of Population.  Users can search for an area of interest by typing its 'place name' in the box or by clicking on a province or territory from the list and selecting the area from a list.

 Topic-based tabulations present a portrait of Canada based on the various census topics, including housing and shelter costs, and immigration and citizenship. The content of these tables ranges from simple overviews to complex cross-tabulations.  They range in complexity and are available for various levels of geography.

Let’s try the exercises...
