Ancient China The Shang Dynasty

What is a dynasty? – Rule passed down trough the generations of one family  The Shang dynasty was China’s first known Dynasty

Shang Agriculture Crops: millet or rice Domesticated animals: pigs, chickens, and silk worms ( for silk cloth)

Shang: Bronze The bronze age!!!! Bronze is a metal made by combining copper and tin together Bronze was used to make tools, weapons, and beautiful art Metal was associated with royalty- so the royals had a variety of objects made out of bronze

Shang: Dragon Bones Dragon bones consisted of animal bones and turtle shells These bones were sold and used to make medicine The king would ask a question, and when the oracle bones cracked the king would have his answer from the ancestors What is an oracle? – A person who gives wise advice  Ancestor? Dead relatives further back than grandparents

Shang Beliefs Ancestors: worship was very important to the Shang – They felt that it was the success of crops, and the health of well being were based on the happiness of their ancestors – Ancestors were pleased life would be great, not pleased- tragedies will possibly occur Diviner: a person who was believed to communicate with the spirits if the dead and worked with Dragon Bones. Polytheistic- people worshipped many gods Shang Ti was the god worshipped by everyone in the Shang Dynasty, was believed to have a link between the people and heavenly beings

Shang Writing Pictographs: pictures combined to make thousands of words Used to writing to keep up with tax records, building plans, army orders, and books

Shang Silk Silk is used in China to weave beautiful clothing, ribbons and decorations Silk is made from the cocoon of a silkworm and was discovered during the time of the Shang

Shang Government Shang Dynasty had a strong army They conquered as many as 1800 city- states To keep control of their conquered lands, the Shang created a simple government Monarchy City- states with a clan ruler – Each ruler owed their loyalty to the Emperor – Tang was the first King and gave clan rulers complete rule of their city-state
