Govt. increases spending; corruption. Droughts, floods, famines occur. Poor lose respect for govt. They join rebels & attack landlords. Rebel bands find strong leader who unites them. It influenced the culture of China. This system used both ideographs and pictographs, signs that expressed thoughts or ideas.

On turtle shells, Shang priests wrote questions addressed to the gods or the ancestors. Priests then heated the bone or shell until it cracked. By interpreting the pattern of cracks, they could gain communicate with the ancestors and gain wisdom.
