OBJECTIVES  To learn and become familiar with the AASL Standards for the 21st- Century Learner.  To build connections and integrate the AASL Standards for the 21st Century Learner and the Georgia Performance standards.  To learn how the AASL Standards for the 21 st Century Learner can increase student achievement.

Which of these goals do you have for your students?  I want my students to inquire, think critically, and gain knowledge.  I want my students to draw conclusions, make informed decisions, apply knowledge to new situations, and create new knowledge.  I believe that students should share knowledge and participate ethically and productively as members of our democratic society.  I want my students to pursue personal and aesthetic growth. ALL OF THEM OF COURSE!

C l i c k f o r A A S L S t a n d a r d s The Standards for the 21st Century Learner were developed by the American Association of School Librarians as a set of skills that learners in this century will need to succeed.  Inquire, think critically, and gain knowledge.  Draw conclusions, make informed decisions, apply knowledge to new situations, and create new knowledge.  Share knowledge and participate ethically and productively as members of our democratic society.  Pursue personal and aesthetic growth. These skills are presented in four main standards:

Let’s Explore the Standards Each standard has four strands of essential attributes students who master a standard should demonstrate. Skills - Key abilities needed for understanding, learning, thinking and mastering subjects. Skills - Key abilities needed for understanding, learning, thinking and mastering subjects. Dispositions in Action - Ongoing beliefs and attitudes that guide thinking and intellectual behavior that can be measured through actions taken. Responsibilities - Common behaviors used by independent learners in researching, investigating, and problem solving. Responsibilities - Common behaviors used by independent learners in researching, investigating, and problem solving. Self-Assessment Strategies - Reflections on one’s own learning to determine that the skills, dispositions, and responsibilities are effective. Self-Assessment Strategies - Reflections on one’s own learning to determine that the skills, dispositions, and responsibilities are effective.

Match the Attribute and Key Question Skills Skills Dispositions in Action Dispositions in Action Responsibilities Responsibilities Self-Assessment Strategies Self-Assessment Strategies Can the student recognize personal strengths and weaknesses over time and become a stronger, more independent learner? Is the student disposed to higher-level thinking and actively engaged in critical thinking to gain and share knowledge? Does the student have the right proficiencies to explore a topic or subject further? Is the student aware that the foundational traits for 21st century learning require self-accountability that extends beyond skills and dispositions?
