Medical School Open Day April 2013

Impact Q. Before/After attending the OD at the Uni, how likely were you to apply to the UoE Medical School? Q. If the likelihood of you applying to the University of Exeter Medical School has changed after attending the Open Day, why is that? Medical School Open Day April % of April visitors to the Open day were likely to apply to the UoE Medical School after attending the Open Day which shows the impact of the event; only 67% were likely to apply before attending. The facilities and the campus building were far more developed and nicer than I previously thought. The facilities were outstanding, especially the new Forum at Streatham campus, and the staff and students were friendly and helpful throughout the day. The most influential part of the open day which changed my mind was the Medicine presentation, which covered almost everything Really good accommodation and lecture facilities. The students were very optimistic about the university and the course was very appealing. The students were incredibly helpful and informative in their views. I wasn't sure about the PBL course type before and thought a systems based course would be the one for me, but I've now realised how key PBL is in developing skills like self directed study/teamwork you'll use as a doctor We visited because we did not think it was a PBL school. We are looking for traditional/integrated. When we discovered on arrival it was PBL, Exeter went from "possible" to "no". But as we had come 200 miles we had a look round anyway. The PBL demo made us think much harder. On reflection afterwards, the decision is that at its best, PBL could be very good indeed.

Applying Q. When deciding which universities to apply to, please identify the most important factors in your decision: Entry requirements are the most important consideration when applying to university, followed by the location of the university. The NSS results factor as the least important. Medical School Open Day April 2013

Which of the following reasons best describe why you visited the UoE Medical School Open Day? 79% of all respondents initially found out about the Open Day via the UoE website. The primary reason to come to the Open Day was to visit the campus (69%), and then find out more about the course (56%). Medical School Open Day April 2013

Please rate the following aspects of the Open Day: Across the board, staff and students were viewed positively, with the majority of visitors rating them as very or quite helpful. Overall impressions faired well overall; Streatham Campus impressed the most. Medical School Open Day April 2013

General Tours & Fairs Q. Please rate the general talks/sessions/presentations that you attended during the Open Day Generally the talks, sessions and presentations were well received by the visitors that attended them. Academic Sessions Q. Please rate the academic talks/sessions/presentations that you attended during the Open Day: The Medicine presentation and Clinical Skills demonstrations were well attended and well rated by the majority of respondents. However, the other three sessions were not so highly attended. Medical School Open Day April 2013

Usefulness & Improvements Q. What were the most useful elements of the Open Day for you? Q. How do you think the University of Exeter’s Medical School Open Day could have been improved? Medical School Open Day April 2013 ‘Overview of the degree programme’, followed by ‘Speaking to students’ were deemed the most useful aspects of the Open Day. Suggestions for improvement included: The tours were fantastic, however it may have been helpful if the tour guide studied medicine themselves, however they were very helpful and pleasant. Dual campus meant that information appeared spread out and disjointed. A lot of time was spent travelling between the two. Information was available but for instance finance took a while to find. The lunch facilities were poor. Huge queues at Costa Coffee and no hot food available at Streatham campus. It was difficult to plan our day because the timetable of presentations, shuttle bus times, maps etc were not available on the website well ahead.

Pre Open Day Registering to attend and the information pack received ahead of the Open Day were both rated very highly by visitors; at least 96% rated them very or quite good. Q. How would you rate each of the following aspects, prior to the Open Day? Medical School Open Day April 2013

Any Further Comments Q. Do you have any other comments about the Medical School Open Day at the University of Exeter? Medical School Open Day April 2013 The staff and students were very helpful and informative. All the speakers in the lecture on medicine were excellent. Will definitely apply, and has given me a goal - now I have to get the grades. Overall, very good. I'm looking forward to visiting again in the future, and hopefully studying with you! Excellent University and excellent Medical School. Would be so pleased to do my training there. Would have liked to see: a) taster lecture(s) in something difficult (eg biochem) to see if medicine was the right choice; b) labs and examples of practicals; c) typical timetables for each of the years - the schematic given in the lecture was too vague to be clear; d) less management speak - about communication skills etc -and much more about medicine The Open Day brochure was particularly useful and comprehensive, I especially like the provision of the back page where I could plan the sessions I wanted to attend, so as to make the most of the day. Thank you so much I had a lovely time and the open day gave me a great insight in what it was to be an Exeter medical student it also have me an idea of what the course was like thank you The atmosphere at St Luke's wasn't as impressive as Streatham's probably because there weren't as many people there but considering that is where I would spend most of my time, it wasn't overly impressive. Very enjoyable day for myself and the guests I brought along - definitely looking to apply! I feel that more signs are needed as it was difficult to find out where you needed to be.

Other Med School Open Days Q. Have you attended any other medical school Open Days? Q. How would you rate the University of Exeter's Medical School Open Day against this Open Day? 21 students have attended at least one other Medical School Open Day: Plymouth The University of Exeter’s Medical School Open Day was... Other Medical School Open Day April 2013 ImperialCardiff

Travel & Buses Q. How far did you travel (each way) to get to the Open Day? Q. If you used the Open Day bus service, how would you rate this service? 15% 29% 25% 23% 8% Average distance travelled for the Open Day was 117 miles 81% of June visitors rated the bus between campuses as ‘very/quite good’; the remainder did not use it. 0% Medical School Open Day April 2013
