Progress Determined as a group to design the retractable water ski line Drafted the problem statement, design partition, project plan, and task assignments

Problem Statement There was a need found for a device that would retract a water ski line without manual retraction by the user. The ski line can become cumbersome and inconvenient, and may be difficult for some users to retract. The current devices available all are hand driven and are not mounted to the watercraft.

Problem Statement The goal is to design a machine that can be adjusted to fit a number of watercraft and can retract a ski line using a motor. The product would be beneficial to people who enjoy water recreation but have trouble retracting the ski lines themselves. The design would accommodate a wide array of watercraft and be able to pull in the standard ski line weight requirements.

Design Partition Line - strong enough to satisfy published safety guidelines, yet compact enough to be wound into a reasonably-sized casing Retraction Mechanism - draw the line back into the boat, allow for simple deployment for the next skier, and maintain a constant line length during skiing Motor - provide the torque necessary to wind the retraction mechanism’s reel, and it must not be susceptible to the corrosion and electrical problems inherent to a wet environment

Design Partition Assembly and Casing - should be as durable, light, and inexpensive as possible, while still being strong enough to satisfy the published safety guidelines for a water ski line mount Swivel – needed to adjust the position of the line, which should be in the center of the boat above the motor during use, but away from the motor during retraction to avoid tangles or a cut line Mount - must satisfy published safety guidelines with regard to maximum stress conditions and should be adjustable to a wide array of watercraft

Project Plan

Task Assignments Hayato Shimuzu  Implement expertise in Pro-E, ANSYS, and I-DEAS towards a clear and appropriate CAD characterization of the design.  Archive hard copies of weekly deliverables and meeting notes.  Proofread deliverables. Rick Rogers  Lead all aspects of prototyping, including background specification research, material selection and purchase, assembly, and diagnostic testing.

Task Assignments Louay Abdul-Hadi  Develop a clear and comprehensive website documenting project progress.  Support Hayato in CAD characterization of the design, assuming particular responsibilities in the Finite Element Analysis of heavily stressed project components.  Support Rick in project assembly. Jennifer Edwards  Research specifications, safety guidelines and constraints involved in waterski line equipment.  Keep project meeting minutes.  Develop a clear and professional posterboard display outlining the proposed solution to the design constraints.

Task Assignments Michael Galvin  Serve as project manager, promoting productive meetings and moderating design disputes.  Research the dimensions and specifications of watercraft commonly used in water sports such as waterskiing and wakeboarding. Consequently fabricate a representative mock-up of a boat stern on which prototyped designs can be mounted and tested.  Support Hayato in developing 3D CAD representations of functional components.

Future Tasks Develop five design solutions for the retractable water ski line
