1 Design Process: The Scientific Method of Building
Chapter 8:Engineering Design Process: The Scientific Method of Building

2 Test and Evaluate Select Best Solution Solutions Construct Prototype
Identify the Problem or Need Research/Consider Requirements & Constraints Propose Solutions/ Identify Tradeoffs Select Best Solution Construct Prototype Test and Evaluate Solutions Communicate Redesign

3 Engineering Involves everything needed to study, design and create technological projects

4 Brainstorm ideas New or improved technical objects arise when there exists a need to be filled List and/or sketch all of your ideas

5 Choose the best idea Depends on the specifications/requirements
Indicated in a document containing the list of needs, requirements and constraints to respect during a project.

6 Specifications Constraints outlined in the specifications fall under different categories Human Constraints to do with the user Technical Constraints function Physical Constraints contact with natural elements Industrial Constraints production Economic Constraints cost Environmental Constraints impact on the environment Complete pages in workbook

7 Draw your idea Design plan  how it works and/or
Technical drawing  how its built ALWAYS use ruler and pencil!!!

8 Design Plan Simple diagram showing how an object will work by indicating the forces and motions that will come into play. “How does the object work?” Contains the following: Name of the parts Movement of the parts Operation forces involved Any other useful info needed to understand how the object works See page 257 in your workbook for an example Complete pages in wb

9 Technical Diagram A simplified drawing that shows the parts and materials needed to build an object. Includes how parts are linked an guided. “How do we build the object?”

10 Includes: Important shapes and dimensions to be considered
Names of parts Materials to be used Linking components Guiding controls Any other info needed to build the object See page 260 in workbook for example Complete pages

11 Materials Raw Materials a natural substance that acts as a building block for other materials. Raw materials are transformed so they can be used to make an object. Ex: wood, sand, sheep’s wool

12 Material: used to make an object, often comes from raw materials that have been transformed by humans. Ex: wooden board, leather, steel Complete pages 266 and 269.

13 Equipment Includes all of the devices, machines, instruments, vehicles and tools used to make the object. Complete Pages in workbook

14 Build your technical object
Following safety workshop rules, begin building Your idea might change as you build

15 Test your technical object
Perform tests that will determine if you have satisfied your need Do many trials, if possible

16 Review Can be done at anytime Correct your design process as you go
