Ground Surface Breakage Due to Strong Shaking Mw 6.5 San Simeon earthquake of 12/22/03 [note: surface faulting has not been found]

Strong shaking along a ridgeline, approximately 24 km southeast of the epicenter, caused tiles to slip off various roof sections. (Treiman, Manson)

Cracks and ground settlement due to ridgetop spreading on Black Mountain, approximately 24 km southeast of the epicenter. (Manson)

Cracks and ground settlement due to ridgetop spreading on Black Mountain, approximately 24 km southeast of the epicenter. (Manson)

Uncemented stone wall, approximately 24 km southeast of the epicenter, has partially toppled due to ground shaking. (Treiman)

Fissures from ridgetop spreading extend from the parking area of a house to a barn/shop structure. (site is ~25 km from the epicenter) (Treiman)

Fissures from ridgetop spreading extend toward barn/shop structure. (Treiman)

Ridgetop spreading has caused earth to pull away from concrete slab foundation of structure; fissures extend northeast into wooded slope. (Manson)
