Tsunamis By: Taylor Murphy & Merry Nestor

How do tsunamis occur ? When a tsunami leaves the deep ocean it travels to the shallow water near the inlands. Tsunamis usually occur after a volcanic eruption, an earthquake, or sometimes they can occur after landslides.

Where & Why do Tsunamis occur ? Tsunamis are a mainly caused by earthquakes. The earthquakes don’t always have to be underwater. They can also be caused by landslides, or a submarine’s volcanic eruptions, but these are less common than earthquakes. In the massive Pacific Ocean, the Ring of Fire is present. Most earthquakes, tsunamis, and other natural disasters occur here. Continents, Countries, Mountain chains, and underwater trenches are what make up Ring of Fire. Japan is an archipelago in the Pacific Ocean, and is in the Ring of Fire. Japan recently had a 9.0 earthquake, measured on the Richter Scale, which turned into a 500mph tsunami wave. : –

When do tsunamis occur ? Tsunamis can occur in any time of the day or night, in any weather condition, and in any season of the year. After an earthquake, or when the earth shifts at a point in time, there is a possibility of a tsunami occurring.

Effects on humans In the recent Japan tsunami, which happened on March 11 th, more than 18,000 bodies have been found since then, and about 10,000 deaths have been confirmed. Many people’s farms have also been destroyed, in the city of Sendai. This next video is about the flooding that came along with the March 11 th tsunami in Japan.

How are tsunamis harmful to humans ? Once a tsunami has stricken an area, many people lose things such as: –Shelters –Food –Clean Drinking Water –Either their life, a friend’s life, or a family members’ People can also get many injuries and diseases from tsunamis. Many other people can sadly drown in the rough waters. In Japan, the earthquake & tsunami waves have caused nuclear plants to explode, like the Fukushima Daiichi power plant, therefore people have to be tested for radiation in their systems. They can die from any cancers that have been caused by the radiation, or from their bone marrow failing.

this is a diagram of a tsunami wave getting bigger as it reaches a city. It also shows that tsunamis are higher and have higher wavelengths when they are near the shore, rather than out in open seas. This is because there is less space for the waves to move when they are out in an open area, compared to a flatter land area, where the wave amplitude can increase because it has a lesser chance for the waves to deepen in the low, sea floor. They are only a few meters in open water, but after they reach the coast they can be up to eighty or more meters high.

Most Destructive Tsunamis 1958, occurred in Lituya Bay, Alaska. This was the biggest wave scientists have seen. It was recorded at 524 meters high. In 2004, there was a tsunami that occurred in the Indian Ocean, killing over 300,000 people. This was the highest rated death toll from a tsunami wave. It hit the locations of Somalia, Sri Lanka, India, Maldives, Malaysia, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Thailand. Lituya Bay, before the tsunami ~~~>

JAPANS MARCH 11 TH TSUNAMI In this recent earthquake & tsunami, as of today, Thursday, March 17 th, 6 days after the natural disasters and nuke plantation explosions, 19 workers that have been inside the plants looking for people & trying to eliminate the possible occurrence of more explosions, are hurt, and 20 are exposed to radiation at the Fukushima Dai-ichi power plant. Over 12,000 people are unaccounted for, and 4,164 people are confirmed to be dead according to the MSNBC Nightly News Report. There is news of a large-scale power outage that could be spread throughout Tokyo. 1,000’s have been scanned for radiation, and over 100 countries have offered aid. Many people in the U.S. have been donating $10.00 or more to the Red Cross to help out Japan.

More about Japans tsunami Number facts 10 meter high waves Traveled 10km inland 12,000 people missing 530,000 people lost their homes 50,000 soldiers were sent to help out 1,000s have been scanned for radiation, and over 100 countries have offered aid. A man was found floating on a piece of his house's roof and he was about 15km offshore. He was rescued.
