September 3, 2015 Professionalism The Student’s Perspective - Jonathan Keow and Nischal Ranganath

CanMEDS Role ✤ As Professionals, physicians are committed to the health and well- being of individuals and society through ethical practice, profession-led regulation, and high personal standards of behaviour.

The Social Contract ✤ Professional role is guided by codes of ethics and a commitment to: ✤ Clinical competence ✤ Appropriate attitudes and behaviours ✤ Integrity ✤ Altruism ✤ Personal well-being ✤ And the public good.

The Social Contract ✤ These commitments form the basis of a social contact between society and positions. ✤ Society, in return, grants special privileges to physicians with the understanding that they are accountable to those served.

The Thin Red Line ✤ Positions, and medical doctors in training are held to a higher standard of behaviour than the rest of society. ✤ Societal behaviour is based on decency ✤ Physician behaviour is based on professionalism ✤ Issues arise when the thin red line of professionalism is crossed.

Pre-clerkship students ✤ Classroom behaviour ✤ Encouraging positive peer relations ✤ Arriving to class on time ✤ Clinical behaviour ✤ Presenting oneself appropriately at clinical encounters

Discussing problems or concerns ✤ Disagreement versus discussion ✤ Appropriate actions ✤ Respect, or the loss of

Discussing patient information ✤ Appropriate anonymity ✤ Appropriate discretion ✤ Family, friends, peers, and strangers

I had the most awesome clinical elective yesterday morning in Cardiology at the Civic Hospital with Dr. Roberts. I got to scrub in to a cardiac transplant surgery that lasted almost 14 hours!! It was the first one they’d done this month! I even had a chance to see the donor heart being flown in all the way from the Vancouver! The patient was the nicest young veteran I’d ever met, and he really deserved this! Helping in such a tangible way really makes me strongly consider cardiac surgery as a potential career opportunity.

Talking and social media use during lectures ✤ Just don’t. ✤ Or at least keep it respectful. October 24, Adapted from Combating the Facebook Index by Hemi Gandhi, Harvard Crimson

Facebook etiquette ✤ Facebook is a public domain ✤ Any comments that are “funny” enough may just re-appear on the internet (reddit.com, 4chan.org, pinterest.com, twitter.com) ✤ Be wary of what you post Facebook posts on Google Maps and Daylight Savings Time reposted to reddit.com

Facebook etiquette

Dress Code ✤ Dressing professionally should not concern you; rather, you should be sure not to dress unprofessionally. Prime Minister Stephen Harper presented pop superstar Justin Bieber with a Diamond Jubilee Medal in Ottawa in November, 2012 (Left).

Your behavior in public places ✤ You’re a medical student during class hours, but you’re a medical professional (in training) for the rest of your working life TMZ obtains video of singer Ariana Grande appearing to lick a donut that she didn't pay for on July 8, 2015

Comments about the Faculty ✤ Appropriate comments and inappropriate comments Adapted from Is it acceptable for a university professor to breastfeed while teaching class? - blogs.sfgate.com Adapted from Misguided professor tweets fat-shaming comments about PhD applicants - examiner.com

MD 2019 Oath of Professionalism ✤ The social contract between you and your future patients, between you and society ✤ Deadline: Tuesday, September 8 th to Chantal Renaud ✤ We are seeking two volunteers should speak to Nischal after this session
