In depth research Unit 66 – Stage Lighting Operations PMD 1

Name: Source Four (Modern Spotlight) Accessories: G-clamp Safety chain Built in Shutters Gel Frame 15 amp plug Beam Angle: 19 to 50 degrees Comparison: I would choose this over another light such as a Minuette Profile as the light beam on a Source Four is bright white whereas a Profile’s light beam is a brownish- white light, also a Profile does not have built in shutters whereas a Source Four does. Scenario: An Actor needs isolating on stage. A Source for is ideal for this situation as it is a spotlight which is made to isolate specific spots with a bright spot of light.

Name: Parcan Accessories: Gel Frame Adjustable arm Bulb is encased unit 15 amp plug G-clamp Safety Chain Beam Angle: 24 degrees Comparison: Par Cans are good for lighting up certain areas of the stage, I would choose this light in place of a Source Four as a spotlight would be too specific and not provide a good general cover, also the Par Cans are excellent at creating chases. Scenario: A Music Gig. I would use a Parcan in this scenario as it is perfect for general cover and creating chase sequences.

Name: LED Parcan Accessories: G-clamp Adjustable arm Safety chain 13 amp plug Beam Angle: 15 to 40 degrees Comparison: I would choose an LED Par Can over a regular Par Can as an LED is much better, an LED is more efficient as the diodes are energy saving bulbs, these also do not cause the light to heat up, an LED is also better by the fact it can change colour on its own and does not need gels to do this, this can be done directly from the light board. Scenario: When a light that can provide multiple colours is needed. I would use an LED Par for this as it is currently the only light which can change colour from the desk itself.

Name: Pebble Convex (Fresnel) Accessories: G-Clamp Safety Chain Gel Frame Barn Doors Pebble Shaped Lens 15 amp plug Beam Angle: 7 – 38 degrees Comparison: I would choose a P.C over a Par Can as both provide general cover but a P.C’s light beam can be directed in whatever way the performer wants whereas a Par Can cannot. Scenario: Spotlights are needed but none are left. This light would be useful as it has the same lens as a spotlight, the light can also be directed with barn doors to a degree.

Name: C.C.T. (Fresnel) Accessories: Rigid Glass Lens Safety Frame G-Clamp Smallest Fresnel Adjustable Knob Gel Frame Barn Doors 15 amp Plug Beam Angle: 18 – 57 degrees Comparison: I would use this light in place of a P.C as this a C.C.T. has a defused light which blends in well whereas a P.C is very defined and will not blend in well. Scenario: a side light is needed at a dance show. We can use this light as it provides good general cover and can be positioned on a stand.

Name: Minuette Profile (Classic Spotlight) Accessories: G-Clamp Safety Chain Gel Frame 15 amp plug Beam Angle: 15 – 30 degrees Comparison: I would use this light with a group of Profiles instead of using both a Source Four and a single Profile as the Source would draw more attention to the subject under the light because of its brighter light, therefore using Profiles would give equal light to all of the items/people underneath it. Scenario: A window effect is needed on stage. This light can use a Gobo to create a window shape at an isolated point on the stage due to the nature of the light.

Name: Selecon (Fresnel) Accessories: Barn Doors 2 Adjustable Knobs Rigid Circular Lens 15 amp plug Beam Angle: 6 – 60 degrees Comparison: I would use this light in place of a Source Four as its light beam can be manipulated and can be used in general washes. Scenario: Needed for a general wash. This light provides a defused beam of light and therefore will spread around the room.

Name:1K (Fresnel) Accessories: Safety Chain Barn Doors 15 amp plug Gel Frame G-Clamp Beam Angle: 74 degrees Comparison: I would use this light in place of a Par Can as a 1K gives a more defused light and can make people stand out on stage as a backlight. Scenario: A Backlight is needed at a musical show. 1Ks are good for backlights as they are bright and will give people a 3D look as opposed to a 2D look.

Name: Flood Light Accessories: Safety Chain G-Clamp Gel Frame (can be used) 15 amp Plug 500 – 650 watts Beam Angle: 60 degrees Comparison: Using this light is much better for use on an audience then an LED because an LED is too specific and will not be able to light the entire audience. Scenario: a Cyclorama is needed. This light is excellent as it will fill the entire Cyclorama with light.

Name: Pin spot Accessories: G-Clamp Safety Chain 13/15 amp plug Plastic coloured casing Comparison: I would use this light instead of an LED because this light is better at moving around whereas an LED cannot move around on its own. Scenario: A Glitter ball is being used and needs light. These lights are quite powerful and can easily light a Glitter ball with little effort.

Name: Birdie Accessories: Safety Chain G-Clamp Gel Frame Barn Doors 13 amp plug Halogen bulbs Comparison: As it is used for subtle lighting, I would choose this light over lights such as a LED as an LED is too bright and will blind people such as in an art exhibit whereas a Birdie will give it enough light for it to stand out. Scenario: A set of lights is needed to light up the audience. I can use this light as it provides enough light to dimly light the audience making them feel a part of the show but not take the attention away from the performers on stage.
