Alcatraz Island Alcatraz Island, referred to as( 别名 ) "The Rock". Alcatraz, which is from Spanish, is the name of a bird---alcatraz ( 鹈鹕鸟 ). Today, it has another meaning, that is devil( 恶 魔 ). It used to be a prison. A prisoner wrote a book,“ Uncle Sam’s Devil’s Island”( 《山姆大叔的恶魔 岛》 ) to tell people the miserable life of the prisoners there. It is located in the San Francisco Bay. It has an area of k ㎡. In 1972, Alcatraz became a national recreation area. Today, it is open to tourists. Visitors can reach the island by ferry ride from Pier 33, near Fisherman’s Wharf, San Francisco. The water tower and powerhouse (at right), which generated electricity for the island

Angel Island For thirty years, from 1910 to 1940, Angel Island in San Francisco Bay was the first, often the only, toehold (落脚点) in America for immigrants from China. During the time they spent on the island, as little as a few days, as long as three years, they carved and ink brushed their thoughts onto the walls. One hundred thirty-five calligraphic (书法的) poems survived, first discovered after Angel Island was abandoned( 遗弃 ) in These tell of voyages (航行) from China, stay (停留) on the island, attitudes towards the first Americans immigration officials and social workers -- and finally their disappointments.
