FOUR-SUIT TRANSFER SYSTEM FOR WNBC SATISH PANCHAMIA 20 JULY 2011

CONTENTS ADVANTAGES OF INT (12-14) OPENING DISADVANTAGES OF INT (12-14) OPENING WHAT ARE TRANSFERS? WHEN SHOULD YOU USE TRANSFERS? WHY ARE TRANSFERS USEFUL? HOW DO YOU RESPOND TO A TRANSFER? WHAT HAPPENS AFTER PARTNER COMPLETES YOUR TRANSFER? EXAMPLES: TRANSFER IN ACTION Satish PanchamiaOctober 152

ADVANTAGES OF INT (12-14) OPENING IT STOPS OPPONENTS FROM BIDDING OPPONENTS WILL HAVE TO BID AT 2-LEVEL (WITH 12 HCP & 6 CARDER) OR DOUBLE (15 + HCP) OR EVEN PASS (with 14 HCP) YOU OFTEN GET HCP IN ANY SINGLE SESSION VERY POPULAR IN THE UK. MOST PEOPLE PLAY !! Satish PanchamiaOctober 153

DISADVANTAGES OF INT (12-14) OPENING IT IS A VERY WEAK OPENING (ONLY HCP) IF YOUR PARTNER IS WEAK (LESS THAN 7 HCP) YOU ARE MOST LIKELY TO MAKE 4 TRICKS – 3 DOWN (WHICH CAN BE VERY COSTLY) YOU CAN MISS 3-5 FIT IN MAJOR CONTRACT IF YOUR PARTNER HAS 5 AND YOU HAVE 3 CARDS IN THE SAME SUIT (E.G. SPADES/HEARTS) Satish PanchamiaOctober 154

WHAT ARE TRANSFERS? IT TELLS YOUR PARTNER YOU HOLD THE SUIT RANKED ABOVE THE ONE YOU HAVE BID THE CONVENTIONAL METHOD IS AS FOLLOWS: 2D SHOWS HEARTS 2H SHOWS SPADES 2S SHOWS CLUBS 2NT SHOWS DIAMONDS Satish PanchamiaOctober 155

WHEN SHOULD YOU USE A TRANSFER? WHENEVER YOU HAVE A 5-CARD (OR LONGER) MAJOR SUIT OR WHENEVER YOU HAVE A 6 CARD (OR LONGER) MINOR SUIT NO OTHER REQUIREMENTS YOU CAN MAKE THE SAME BID WITH 3 POINTS AND WITH 20 POINTS Satish PanchamiaOctober 156

WHY ARE TRANSFERS USEFUL? THE STRONG HAND (INT) IS CONCEALED FROM THE OPPONENTS AS OPENING BIDDER BECOMES DECLARER & WEAK HAND IS ON VIEW IN DUMMY THE OPENING LEAD COMES UP TO THE STRONG HAND AND DECLARER WILL OFTEN GAIN AN EXTRA TRICK AS A RESULT Satish PanchamiaOctober 157

HOW DO YOU RESPOND TO A TRANSFER? COMPLETE THE TRANSFER – BID WHAT YOUR PARTNER HAS ASKED YOU TO BID BUT WITH ONE EXCEPTION: YOU HAVE 4 OF THE PARTNER’S SUIT AND HAVE A MAXIMUM 14 HCP JUMP TO 3-LEVEL Satish PanchamiaOctober 158

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER PARTNER COMPLETES YOUR TRANSFER? CONTINUE TO BID YOUR HAND NATURALLY WITH A WEAK HAND, YOU PASS. WITH A BALANCED/WEAK HAND, BID 2NT/3NT AND IF PARTNER HAS 3-CARD, PARTNER WILL BID AT 3/4 LEVEL. YOU MUST NOT REBID YOUR FIVE-CARD SUIT WITH A STRONG HAND (LESS THAN 17 POINTS) BID NATURALLY AND REACH GAME CONTRACT WITH A STRONG HAND (MORE THAN 18 POINTS) BID 4C TO ASK FOR ACES Satish PanchamiaOctober 159

SOME EXAMPLES: TRANSFER IN ACTION NEW TOY! PLAY! PLAY CONFIDENTLY AND WITHOUT FAIL LET ME KNOW YOUR FEEDBACK IN 3 MONTHS FROM NOW. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION Satish PanchamiaOctober 1510
