Advising international transfer students Focus on international transfer students. Similar sized institutions in attendance Tasked to discuss the various issues institutions face with advising international transfer students

Issues international transfer students encounter Communication barriers Language barrier Cultural rift Lack of articulation agreements Frustration with duration of time to graduate A radical shift sometimes to 2 year institutions and other 4 year schools

Issues international transfer students encounter  Issues of understanding academic integrity  Issues of explaining academic integrity(transcripts evaluation)  Issues of understanding and explaining the importance of immersing into college life e.g honors programs, campus involvement etc.

More Advising Issues Advisors challenge with understanding the way different systems work internationally International students feeling of uncertainty and doubt in a new environment.

How to move forward Cultural sensitivity on the advisors part Paying attention to non-verbal cues Mandatory American culture class (1 credit hour) Immersing international students to the similar opportunities where appropriate (e.g internships, honors programs etc.) Mandatory transitional/remedial English classes(UT offers this) Remembering this is their home away from home.
