Presentation transcript:

Tsunami is a series of ocean waves that send surges of water. Sometimes these surges get to be over 100 feet! These waves land on shore and they can cause widespread disaster.

Tsunamis are caused when there is a huge undersea earthquake. This makes the ocean floor rise and fall and when that happens it launches the huge waves onto shore. They could also be caused by underwater land slides or underwater volcanoes.

Tsunamis mostly happen in the Pacific Ocean 80% of them do. So it is safe to say that is where you will find most of them. Also more commonly tsunamis happen on the Pacific Rim, or the “Rim of Fire”.

An example of this natural disaster is the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. But the country that was hit the hardest, Indonesia, lies in the Pacific Ring of Fire. This is a common place for tsunamis to hit. This tsunami was one of the deadliest that the world has ever recorded. There was 227,898 people that died in this tsunami and that is just an estimate, more people were missing but they were never confirmed as dead.

An example of a destructive tsunami that hit the United States is the tsunami/earthquake of This tsunami hit California by the border of Oregon. 11 people were killed in Crescent City, California and most of there town and area was wiped out.18 foot waves it the area and it was made by a 8.5 magnitude earthquake in Alaska.
