The Basics of Multiplication Multiplication is a quick way of adding a series of numbers. 2 x 4 simply means to add 2 together 4 times or x 2 simply means to add 7 together 2 times or 7+7 The two numbers that are being multiplied are called the factors. When you multiply the factors together the answer you get is called the product.

The Rules of 0's and 1's Anything multiplied by zero will result in a product of zero – NO MATTER HOW BIG THE NUMBER IT WILL ALWAYS BE ZERO! – ex. 9 x 0= 0 – ex. 763 x 0= 0 Anything multiplied by one will result in a product of that number – ex. 23 x 1= 23 – ex. 67,826 x 1= 67,826

Tools to Help Draw a Picture – Multiplication problems can be solved by drawing a picture. – Ex. 3 x 4= ?3 x 4= ? – The picture shows three rows by four columns. Simply count the number of dots total and that will be the product. Multiplication Table – This is a device used to find the product of two factors.device – To use a multiplication table simply put one finger on one factor (on the top) and another finger on the other factor (on the left side). Then drag your two fingers to meet.
