Multiplying Whole Numbers Lessons 4.1-4.7

Math Vocabulary multiply – to add a # to itself one or more times e.x. 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 10 OR 2(5) = 10 product – the final answer that you get from multiplying #s

Basic Multiplying The numbers you multiply in a problem are called factors The order you use when multiplying does not matter. 3 x 4 x 2 = 24 (4) (3) (2) = 24

Multiplying Large Numbers -set up so bigger # is on top -multiply the digit in the “ones” place [on bottom] first -multiply that same # with each place value above, and move to the left 3 x 72 72 x 3 216

Multiplying & Regrouping -multiply by starting with lower “ones” -regroup and add to next answer -multiply by next place value digit -regroup and add to next answer -use place holder “x” in extra spots -make sure to add together final answer(s) 96 x 536 536 x 96 + x 51,456

Multiplying by 10, 100, 1000 -count the # of zeros in the 10, 100, 1000 -write the other given # -add the # of zeros to the right of the # (that you counted in your first step) 45 x 1000 zeros: 000 45000 617 x 10 zeros: 0 6170

Practice a)(3)(2)(5) b)123 12 c)345 x 21 d)(4060)(100)

Homework p. 82-83 #2-14 even, 16, 18, 24-30 even
