How can an assessment serve as a vehicle for learning as well as a tool for measurement?

Varied learning goals require varied methods of assessment.

1. Ensure the Assessment serves learning: ***Whatever we do in the classroom should be for the purpose of enhancing learning.

2. Use Multiple Measures. Varied goals and different types of assessments, i.e., quizzes, observations, etc. can be thought of like a photograph. Evidence along the way. Multiple measures give us greater reliability and accuracy more than any other measure.

3. Align Assessment to Goals: Any single picture is likely incomplete. We need a photo album rather than a snapshot. Assessment should be aligned with your goals. When we want students to know state capitals multiple choice is fine, but what about some things we value such as asking students to write a persuasive essay or debate? We need other measures to assess these assignments.

4. Measure What Matters: 21 st Century Skills are important outcomes of schools, teaching creativity, creative problem solving, critical thinking, the ability to work with others as a team, and the use of technology. Think about assessment as giving students feedback to work towards those goals.

5. Ensure that assessments are fair and equitable. All students should have an equal opportunity to show what they can do. Some assessments should be open ended.
