Module 6 Processing the specimens and inoculation on solid and liquid media Exercise 1

What’s wrong? 2

Answers Specimen containers and centrifuge tubes ALL open at the same time. Too many items in the BSC. High risk of contamination. 3

What’s wrong? 4

Answers Technicians are processing the specimens outside the BSC. One technician is wearing a surgical mask, which does not protect against aerosols). 5

What’s wrong? 6

Answers Tubes are labelled only on the caps. The inoculum volume is large. Inoculated tubes are incubated on a slant, but the inoculum is on one side. Trays for the incubation are made of wood. Tubes are plugged with cotton wool. 7

What’s wrong? 8

Answer Some inoculated tubes are being incubated in boxes made on lightweight card : they can be easily broken! 9

What’s wrong? 10

Answers Unsafe storage of culture tubes: –in lightweight cardboard boxes; –boxes are piled up: if they fall many tubes will break! 11

What’s wrong? 12

Answers NOTHING! Work-flow is organized in a “clean-to-dirty” direction. The work space is not overcrowded. Every item needed for the decontamination procedeure is inside the BSC. 13
