Hong Kong

The only traditional-looking things in Hong Kong

Other than the only Chinese junk I saw in all of China! There are no more “real” ones

The island of Hong Kong became a British colony as a result of the Treaty of Nanjing at the end of the Opium War. It was returned to Chinese control in 1997.

The former British colony drives on the left side of the road (the mainland drives on the right

The people of Hong Kong were concerned that their way of life, one of a capitalist society, would be destroyed once it became a part of Communist China.

China promised that they would allow Hong Kong to maintain capitalism for 50 years and then it would be assimilated with the rest of China. That is not exactly what China meant…

Same menu as the one in Philly!

China believes that its economy will become as strong as Hong Kong’s and capitalist, as well. Then the border between the two will be open.
