Migration Liam Sturgess

 My ethnographic research actually involved the internet and mainstream news.  Very current and serious problem connected to all major cities.

 Migration within and around cities causes high levels of air pollution.

 Risk of heart attack and unstable angina increased by 13% when living in a city. Source: Telegraph Online News paper

 A sample of 125 male and female resident doctors who were an average age of 24 and worked at a hospital in central Beijing. Source: CBSnews.com

Source: washingtonpost.com

 Work by filtering out the dangerous PM (Particulate Matter) 2.5 & 10 particles.  Range of effectiveness, most popular masks between 95 & 99% claimed effectiveness. Source: theworldofchinese.com

 More costly, good home systems range from £50 up around £300.  Very effective, the better models promise around 99.97% efficiency. Source: breathingspace.co.uk

 Cheaper than purifiers but need pre-installed ventilation system.  Less effective than top end purifiers due lack of electrostatic filter. Source: scmp.com

 The concept uses buried coils of copper to create an electrostatic field that attracts smog particles, creating a void of clean air above it. Source: dezeen.com

 People only act when they know there is a serious health risk.  Shows that public awareness is crucial to any personal solution. Source: des.ucdavis.edu

 9/10 knew what smog is.  9/10 wouldn’t recognise it.  8/10 could give two examples of contributors (e.g. vehicles & factories).  7/10 knew there are health implications. 7/10 were either worried or shocked when given the stat.  6/10 said they wouldn’t take further precautions.

 Most knew of smog, although shocked when shown statistics describing the huge numbers of fatalities due to it.  Residents and Commuters to be most effected.

 Beijing and LA common city associations with smog.  Was a scary thought that low levels, invisible to the naked eye are continually doing damage to our lungs and hearts.  “It’s really scary to think about the situation in China and how that could happen to us here too”

 All ages.  Both male and female.  Mixed professions  Focus on those who work outside for long periods of time in a city.

 Cities produce huge amounts of smog.  Cause millions of deaths and hospital visits every year.  Solution would not only save lives and money but would make cities a more attractive place once again.

 Design a feasible, personal solution to combat the negative effects of high air pollution levels within big cities on personal health. The design has to be cost effective so that the RRP would be low enough to entice custom, small and light enough, in order to maintain a portable persona and be more efficient and desirable than current personal product solutions.
